In the U.S., a vast majority of our water supply comes from areas with underlying formations of subsurface limestone. Over geologic time, groundwater, containing a weak solution of carbonic acid, dissolves the limestone as it passes though it. Hence, 85% of the water sources in the U.S. have varying concentrations of calcium and magnesium present. These two minerals are considered the components of "hardness" in water.  Hardness concentrations will vary dependant upon a multitude of factors with no two water sources being identical. Car Wash Water Pretreatment Considerations Hardness minerals need to be addressed when used in a commercial car wash. Dependant upon the concentrations present, they can reek havoc on washing operations, both in the short term and over time. Hardness minerals readily form scale deposits that will plug up distribution piping, spray nozzles, coat hot water heating elements and potentially damage internal components.  In addition, the hardness ions compete with the surface active agents in detergents thereby reducing their cleaning effectiveness dramatically.  In essence, hard water requires more soap to clean a car. This impact of hardness minerals in car washes can be dramatic.  In addition to the higher soap costs, increased energy costs due to scale formation of hot water heating elements is escalated.  Not to mention the progressive wear and tear hardness scale causes to your washing equipment performance. Also, calcium, even in very low concentrations, can and will plug up your expensive reverse osmosis membranes, thereby ruining your spot-free rinse system prematurely.
